Behind The Scenes Of 'Working Girl': The Untold Stories

Working Girl (1988)

Picture this: It’s the late '80s, and director Mike Nichols is on the hunt for the perfect cast for his soon-to-be-classic romantic comedy, Working Girl. Michelle Pfeiffer, Demi Moore, and Shelley Long were all in the running for the lead role, but it was Melanie Griffith who ultimately landed the part. Fast forward 30 years, and the stars are spilling their secrets about the making of this iconic film.

Now, let me tell you, the casting process was no walk in the park. Mike had his heart set on Alec Baldwin for the male lead, but the studio had other ideas. Since Melanie wasn’t exactly a household name at the time, they pushed for Harrison Ford instead. But fate had other plans. Alec ended up taking a smaller role as Melanie’s cheating ex. “I had such a crush on him,” Melanie recently confessed to the Hollywood Reporter. “I was like, ‘Oh come on, have a romance with me!’ But he was all business. He said, ‘I can’t do this with people I work with.’ What a gentleman,” she added with a laugh.

Although Alec and Melanie didn’t share a romantic connection, love still found its way onto the set. Enter Liam Dalton, the current CEO of Axiom Capital Management, who Mike brought in to teach Melanie all about mergers and acquisitions. “At first, I thought, ‘Oh great, I’m stuck with some boring guy from Wall Street,’” Melanie joked. But when Liam walked in, all bets were off. “He was so handsome, so charming. I was like, ‘Tell me everything about mergers and acquisitions.’ We had an incredible romance. He was my love for years after that. We’re still great friends today. He lives in New York, is happily married, and has four kids,” she fondly recalled.

In Working Girl, Sigourney Weaver stepped into the role of the third leg of the love triangle. “Mike handpicked us for the film, and we all knew it,” Sigourney revealed. “Working on this picture was such a joy. It’s a memory I’ll treasure forever.”
