Could be Mary Poppins Returns or something completely unexpected. Lucky for us, the star of that movie is already on board for round two.

Emily Blunt Talks About Playing Mary Poppins and Sequel Possibilities

On Sunday, Dec. 16, Emily Blunt sat down with Anthony Mason for CBS Sunday Morning to chat about her role as Mary Poppins in Mary Poppins Returns, which was set to hit theaters just a couple of days later on Dec. 19. At just 35 years old, Emily already sees Mary Poppins as more than just a beloved character—she’s a full-on superhero. And if you think about it, most superhero movies come with a sequel. So, when asked if she’d be up for reprising her role, Emily didn’t hesitate. “Yes. I want to be her again. I like being her,” Emily said, adding that Mary is “completely bizarre and unknowable.”

Julie Andrews' Role in the Original and Her Thoughts on the New Movie

Now, here’s something interesting. Emily revealed that she hasn’t watched the original 1964 classic starring Julie Andrews since she was a kid. And unfortunately, we probably won’t see Julie making an appearance in this new film or any future sequels. Director Rob Marshall shared Julie’s thoughts on the matter with Entertainment Weekly. “Julie had known it was in the works, then we said, ‘We’re doing it,’ and she said, ‘Oh, thank God,’” Rob recalled. “Then we said, ‘And we’re thinking of Emily Blunt,’ and she just threw her hands up in the air and said, ‘Yes!’ I think a lot of people feel that way about Emily’s work.”

Julie Andrews' Generous Take on Emily Blunt's Role

Speaking to Variety, Emily shared that Julie was incredibly hands-off with the entire process. There was some talk about Julie making a cameo, but she graciously declined. “She said to Rob, ‘Do you know what this is? This is Emily’s version of her and I don’t want it to be that she’s playing Mary Poppins the whole way through, but then I come in and there’s, like ‘Oh, but there’s the real Mary Poppins.’” Julie clearly wanted Emily to shine in her own right.

Mary Poppins Returns also stars Lin-Manuel Miranda, Ben Whishaw, Emily Mortimer, and Meryl Streep.
