Breaking Into Hollywood with National Lampoon’s Animal House

Karen Allen’s journey in Hollywood began with a bang when she landed her first film role in National Lampoon’s Animal House. Back in 1978, it was a whirlwind experience for Karen, who was surrounded by a cast of young, up-and-coming actors who were all making their debut in the film world. “We were all in the same boat, and it was a fantastic experience,” Karen recalls. “We got along so well, and many of those friendships have lasted a lifetime.” Before Animal House, Karen was focused on theater projects. It was a small casting notice that changed everything for her. “I had no idea what I was getting into,” she laughs. “It was like stepping into an entirely new world.”

Partnering with Harrison Ford in Raiders of the Lost Ark

Fast forward to Raiders of the Lost Ark, and Karen found herself working alongside the legendary Harrison Ford. While she was aware that Steven Spielberg was a big deal, having only seen Jaws and Close Encounters of the Third Kind, the magnitude of the project wasn’t immediately clear. “It was such a different world, and the script was quite mysterious,” Karen explains. “But it was an incredible adventure, and working with Steven Spielberg was an experience like no other.” This role marked the beginning of Karen’s iconic partnership with Ford, which would continue years later in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.
