During a recent event in London while promoting her best-selling memoir, Becoming, Michelle Obama shared a delightful anecdote that has royal fans buzzing. According to The Mirror, the former First Lady revealed that Queen Elizabeth isn’t as rigid about royal protocol as many might think. In fact, during a visit to Windsor Castle in 2016, the Queen herself dismissed the rules as "rubbish." Can you believe it?
Michelle recalled how nervous she was before meeting the Queen, with all sorts of royal protocol buzzing in her head. “I was like, ‘Don’t trip down the stairs and don’t touch anybody, whatever you do,’” she said. But when the Queen arrived, she was refreshingly casual. “She said, ‘Just get in [the car], sit wherever,’ and she’s telling you one thing, but you’re remembering all the protocol. And then she says, ‘Oh, it’s all rubbish, just get in.’” Talk about breaking the mold, right?
When the Queen Laughs Off the Rules

Michelle, now 54, was determined to follow the rules after being criticized in the past for a seemingly innocent gesture. Back in 2009, she touched the Queen’s back during their first meeting, sparking a media frenzy. But in Becoming, Michelle shares a heartwarming story about bonding with the Queen over something we can all relate to—uncomfortable shoes. “I confessed to the Queen that my feet were hurting. She confessed that hers hurt too. We looked at each other with identical expressions, like, when is all this standing around with world leaders going to finally wrap up? And with that, she let out a fully charming laugh,” she said.

When Protocol Takes a Backseat to Human Connection
But the story doesn’t end there. Michelle also recalled how their interaction at a reception in 2009 was captured on camera and became global news. “A breach in royal protocol! Michelle Obama dares to hug the Queen!” the headlines screamed. Despite the media uproar, Michelle didn’t realize she was breaking any rules at the time. Thankfully, the Queen didn’t seem to mind either. In fact, she even leaned in closer, resting a gloved hand lightly on Michelle’s back. “If I hadn’t done the proper thing at Buckingham Palace, I had at least done the human thing,” Michelle reflected.
