Tom Selleck's Life Beyond The Spotlight: A Rancher's Paradise

Tom Selleck Opens Up about Leaving Hollywood For Ranch Life in a Rare

It’s been half a century since Tom Selleck first stepped into the world of show business, but these days, the spotlight isn’t where you’ll find him happiest. Instead, he’s miles away from Hollywood, living a tranquil life on a 65-acre ranch in Ventura County, California. This isn’t just any old property—it’s a beautifully restored 1910 hunting lodge that serves as his sanctuary.

Why Tom Selleck Loves His Ranch

For Tom, this ranch is more than just a place to live; it’s a retreat that balances out the often surreal world of acting. “The acting business is an abstraction,” he says. “You create something, it gets put on film, and then everyone debates whether it’s good or bad. But here, when I dig a hole and plant an oak tree—I’ve probably planted a thousand of them—it feels real. It’s tangible. You can watch it grow. It’s a far cry from fame, and it keeps me grounded,” he explained, his voice filled with a sense of contentment.

Buying the Ranch: A Family-Focused Decision

Back in 1988, Tom made a bold move by purchasing this property from the late Dean Martin, right as his final season on "Magnum, P.I." was wrapping up. It wasn’t long after that his daughter, Hannah, was born. “I left ‘Magnum’ to start a family,” the 73-year-old revealed. “It took me a long time to step off that fast-moving train, but I’ve worked hard to find balance, and this ranch has been instrumental in helping me achieve that.”

Still Acting, but on His Terms

Living far from the city lights doesn’t mean Tom has hung up his acting hat. He stars in the popular series "Blue Bloods," which requires him to travel to New York City a few days a week. “This is a different gig compared to ‘Magnum,’” he admitted. “I don’t work every single day, and while I don’t love the commute, it’s all good. I’ve got a job right now that I absolutely love.”
