When Betty White Stole the Show
Let me tell you, nobody was expecting it! On Monday, September 17, 2018, Betty White made a surprise appearance at the Emmys, and let’s just say it was a moment that nobody will forget anytime soon. The legendary actress, who was 96 at the time, took the stage and instantly became the center of attention. While some people were thrilled to see her, others expressed concerns about her health on social media. One fan tweeted, “Uh oh, is Betty White in poor health? This might be sad #Emmys, but damn, is she amazing.” Another chimed in, “At 96 years old, her health is definitely starting to fail her… but she’s still a humble, amazing, lovely, hilarious, brilliant, adorable goddess. Betty White, I salute you.”
Her Heartfelt Moment on Stage
When comedians Kate McKinnon and Alec Baldwin introduced Betty, the audience erupted in applause, giving her a standing ovation. Betty, ever the gracious star, took a moment to thank everyone for their years of support. With her signature wit, she joked, “I’m just going to quit while I’m ahead.” She even pretended to walk off-stage, leaving everyone laughing. She then added, “It’s incredible that I’m still in this business and you’re still putting up with me.” Classic Betty, right?
Behind the Scenes: What People Are Saying
Now, some folks were worried that Betty seemed a little frail and quieter than usual during her appearance. But here’s the thing—she looked happier than ever. In a recent exclusive interview with Closer Weekly, Steven J. Boettcher, who co-directed the documentary Betty White: First Lady of Television, revealed that Betty has no intention of retiring anytime soon. He shared, “She told me, ‘I’m going to be in the saddle forever.’ She loves working; she loves the challenge. She’s someone that we’re all better off for that she’s lived this long.”

Betty herself has spoken candidly about aging in the spotlight. When she celebrated her 95th birthday in January 2017, she opened up to Yahoo’s Katie Couric about it. She said, “I keep thinking, ‘Betty, you’re 95 years old.’ I’m so blessed with good health and faculties, and I’ve got memories and all that. You can’t really expect that at 95.” With her signature humor, she added, “You think you’ll fade off into the sunset. Well, the sun sets every night, but I just won’t go away.”
Betty's Secrets to Staying Sharp
So, how does she do it? In a previous interview with Closer Weekly, Betty’s former Hot in Cleveland co-star Wendie Malick joked about the star’s secret weapon. “Hot dogs and vodka! It’s her secret weapon. I don’t think it’s for everyone—don’t try it at home!” Wendie revealed. But there’s more to Betty’s routine than just hot dogs and vodka. A close friend of the actress shared with Closer Weekly that every single morning, Betty reads the Los Angeles Times cover to cover, along with a couple of other newspapers. And if that’s not impressive enough, she always does at least two full crossword puzzles every day.
Staying Active and Looking Ahead
A physical therapist visits Betty twice a week to guide her through a light exercise regimen, which includes walking around the grounds of her Brentwood, CA home. One of her friends told Closer, “She watches golf on Sundays, and then she’ll call me and say, ‘I’ve been working on my golf swing in the living room and I just can’t get my flat-iron swing right!’”
Betty’s dear friend and former housekeeper, Edna McNair, shared that the actress hopes to celebrate many more birthdays in the future. “Last I talked to her, we were teasing each other about how long we’re going to live,” Edna said. “We said we want to be like Moses and live to be 120!”
We’re just so glad Betty continues to feel well, and we hope she’s around for many, many more years to come. She’s truly a national treasure, and her presence lights up any room she enters.
