Princess Diana would have been the 'best grandmother ever,' her brother

Princess Diana's younger brother, Charles Spencer, is opening up about his late sister, 21 years after her untimely death. In an exclusive interview with People, the 54-year-old Countess of Spencer shares heartfelt thoughts about the woman who captivated the world. Let me tell you, this conversation is packed with emotion and reflection.

Charles reveals a touching thought about Diana's potential as a grandmother. "One of the great tragedies is that Diana would have been the best grandmother ever," he says. If you think about it, Diana would have been a doting grandma to three adorable little ones: Prince George, who's now 5, Princess Charlotte, 3, and Prince Louis, who's just four months old. Can you imagine the joy she would have brought to their lives?

Though Diana tragically passed away in a car accident in 1997, Charles finds solace in watching her legacy live on through her two sons, Prince William, now 36, and Prince Harry, 33. "I love seeing the sort of uncomplicated way that they deal with people, and put them at their ease," Charles told the news outlet. It's like they've inherited Diana's natural charm and warmth, making it easy to see where they got it from. "It’s so easy to connect the dots between them and their mother," Charles adds.

He goes on to express how deeply he values the respect and admiration for Diana that remains within her immediate family. "I love the fact that there’s still such veneration inside her immediate family for what she was, and what she meant. I think that’s fantastic," he says. There's a real sense of pride in his voice as he speaks about his sister's enduring impact.

Time moves quickly, and Charles is astonished by how fast the years have gone by. "What’s amazing to me is the passing of time," he reflects. "Now William and Catherine are nearly the same age as Diana when she died." It’s a sobering thought, isn’t it?

Charles remains committed to honoring Diana's memory. "One of the reasons I wanted to talk now is because I think after 20 years, someone shifts from being a contemporary person to a person of history actually," he explains. "And Diana deserves a place in history." He believes it's crucial for younger generations, those under 35 who might not have vivid memories of her, to understand just how extraordinary she was. "I think that it’s important for people who are under 35, who probably won’t remember her at all, to remember that this is a special person. Not just a beautiful one," he concludes.
