A Classic Comedy Franchise Set for a Modern Revival?
Let's rewind to the golden era of '80s and '90s comedy, where one iconic franchise stole the hearts of millions — Police Academy. According to actor Steve Guttenberg, who played the lovable and slightly dimwitted Cary Mahoney, this legendary series might be dusting off its badge and making a much-anticipated return. First hitting theaters in 1984, the original movie was a hilariously over-the-top series that spanned an entire decade with seven unforgettable adventures. The simple premise? A newly-elected mayor enacts a law requiring the police department to accept every recruit who walks through the door. And what do you get? The most dysfunctional, chaotic, and downright hilarious group of cops you've ever seen.
Among this motley crew, Steve Guttenberg's Cary Mahoney stood out as the voice of relative sanity — emphasis on relative. Over the years, Mahoney's journey took him from a clueless cadet to a somewhat competent sergeant. Now, in a recent Twitter exchange, Steve confirmed the buzz that fans have been eagerly waiting for. When a fan named Adam Hirschovitz tweeted, "Please tell me you're making a new Police Academy film," Steve responded with a tantalizing tease: "Adam, the next Police Academy is coming, no details yet, but it is in a gift bag being readied!"
Can you hear the collective cheers from fans all over the world? Maybe not with your ears, but you can definitely feel the excitement in the air. The Police Academy series wasn't just about slapstick humor and absurd situations — it was a cultural phenomenon that brought laughter and joy to millions of people during its run. Now, with the possibility of a new installment on the horizon, fans are buzzing with anticipation.

A Look Back at the Original Franchise
The Police Academy series includes Police Academy (1984), Police Academy 2: Their First Assignment (1985), Police Academy 3: Back in Training (1986), Police Academy 4: Citizens on Patrol (1987), Police Academy 5: Assignment Miami Beach (1988), Police Academy 6: City Under Siege (1989), and Police Academy: Mission to Moscow (1994). Interestingly, Steve Guttenberg only appeared in the first four films. This might come as a surprise to fans, considering his character seemed central to the franchise. But as Steve humorously explained to the AVTV Club, his absence wasn't due to a lack of enthusiasm for the role. "They just decided they'd had enough of paying me," he joked. "It was one of those deals: they just didn't want to pay me anymore." Despite this, Steve had already made a fortune from his time on the series, proving that even if the money stopped flowing, the memories and success stayed.
When asked about how he landed the role of Cary Mahoney, Steve revealed it was a straightforward audition process. "Just an audition. My agent put me up for the part. I'd just finished doing The Man Who Wasn't There, which was an invisible-man movie, and I went straight into Police Academy. I got the part from doing a screen test, and that movie was fantastic because of Hugh Wilson and Paul Maslansky, the director and producer, respectively. They were just brilliant comedy guys. Absolutely out-of-this-world brilliant."
As of now, there's no official word on when the new Police Academy will hit production. But one thing's for sure — fans are ready to gear up for another round of laughs and chaos with their favorite cops.
