Michelle Obama Shares Her Story Through Instagram

On a crisp Wednesday, September 12th, Michelle took to Instagram to spill the tea about her upcoming tour. In a heartfelt video, she opened up about her life, her roots, and her journey. She said, “I’m from the South Side of Chicago. I attended Princeton and Harvard. I’m a wife, a mother, a daughter, and a sister.” She went on to describe herself as a lawyer, a nonprofit leader, a hospital executive, and most importantly, the First Lady of the United States. But she didn’t stop there. Michelle challenged her followers by asking, “Where are you from? What do you do? What school did you go to?”

Michelle continued her Instagram post by sharing the deeper layers of her life, the ones that don’t always make it into the spotlight. She talked about the little details that make her who she is today. “As I’ve written my memoir, Becoming, I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about my story, mining it for the kinds of details I’d usually just brush off or even forget about,” she explained. She shared moments like the narrow taillights of her father’s car, a meaningful conversation with her mother on the way home, and the warmth of her daughter’s forehead when she had a fever.

Michelle’s Book Tour: A Celebration of Her True Self

In sharing these intimate details, Michelle revealed something powerful. She realized that her life isn’t defined by the surface-level facts she often shares. “Those surface-level ‘stats’ don’t really tell my story at all,” she admitted. She’s ready to share the full picture with her fans, the good, the bad, and everything in between. “This fall, I’d like to share that fuller story with all of you on my book tour. It’s the story of my humdrum plainness, my tiny victories, my lasting bruises, my ordinary hopes and worries,” she said. “It’s the story of who I am, truly, and I’m proud of it—blemishes and all.”

Michelle’s tour kicks off in her beloved hometown of Chicago, Illinois, on November 13th, and she’ll visit other major cities like Brooklyn, New York, Dallas, Texas, Washington, D.C., and Los Angeles, California. She’s feeling a mix of emotions about her book release—proud but also a little scared. “I am proud of what I’ve created. I’m proud because it is candid, it’s honest, it is totally and utterly me,” she shared. “So I’m also a little frightened because it is so candid and honest and open.”

Empowering Others Through Storytelling

Michelle hopes her book will inspire others to embrace their own stories, no matter how big or small. “I’m hoping that, because of this book, others feel the power of their own voice and their own story—not in the big moments, but in the little things, the small moments, the bumps, the bruises, the highs and the lows—because those are the things that make us uniquely who we are,” she said.

Michelle’s tour will be more than just a book promotion. She’s giving away 10 percent of the seats to those who can’t afford to attend, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to be inspired. “I hope that this tour will inspire others to reflect upon and share their own stories—all the joys and sorrows, all the scars and renewals—so that together, we can better recognize that each of us, in our own way, is in a constant process of becoming,” she said.

A Sneak Peek Into Becoming

Earlier this year, Michelle gave her fans a taste of what’s to come in Becoming by sharing photos and memories from her life. In late May, she posted a sweet throwback picture of herself as a little girl with her parents. She wrote, “My father, Fraser, taught me to work hard, laugh often, and keep my word. My mother, Marian, showed me how to think for myself and to use my voice. Together, in our cramped apartment on the South Side of Chicago, my family helped me see the value in our story, in my story, and in the larger story of our country.”

Fans were quick to respond, many noting how much Michelle resembles her mother. “You look just like your gorgeous mama! So so excited for your book,” one fan commented. Another wrote, “Marian and Fraser did a fine job in raising you. Also, amazing how much you look like your mother.”

Michelle also shared a glimpse of her college years at Princeton in the 1980s. She opened up about her experiences as a first-generation college student, offering advice to current students. “I know that being a first-generation college student can be scary, because it was scary for me,” she said. “I was black and from a working-class neighborhood in Chicago, while Princeton’s student body was generally white and well-to-do. I’d never stood out in a crowd or a classroom because of the color of my skin before. But I found close friends and a mentor who gave me the confidence to be myself.”
