Fall Brings a Fresh Start for "The Conners"

Get ready for something new this fall! On June 21, ABC announced that the hit series "Roseanne" is getting a reboot—but this time, it'll be sans its original star, Roseanne Barr. The new version, aptly titled The Conners, will premiere later this year, airing Tuesday nights at 8 p.m. If you're wondering how the show will address Roseanne's absence, well, that's still a mystery. But one thing's for sure: the Conner family is about to take center stage in a big way.

Roseanne herself weighed in with a statement, saying, "I regret the circumstances that have caused me to be removed from Roseanne. I agreed to the settlement so 200 beloved cast and crew members could keep their jobs, and I wish the best for everyone involved." It's a bittersweet moment, but it's clear Roseanne's decision was made with the best interests of her team in mind.

Behind the Scenes: How "The Conners" Came to Be

According to sources from The Hollywood Reporter, ABC and producer Carsey-Werner have requested that Roseanne "not participate financially or creatively" in the spin-off. The show is rumored to focus on Sara Gilbert's character, Darlene Conner, and her family. Fans of the original series will be thrilled to know that John Goodman and Laurie Metcalf are reportedly on board to reprise their roles. Interestingly, it seems Roseanne was already considering stepping aside financially to ensure the show's success and the continuation of jobs for those involved.

  • A source close to the situation told Page Six on June 12, "Roseanne feels terrible about her actions and is trying to find a way to help those affected by the cancellation. She's considering giving up financial and creative participation in the spin-off so the people she loves can have jobs. Holding on would only be a stumbling block." It's a move that shows Roseanne's willingness to put the team first, even if it means stepping back.

    Rebranding "Roseanne": The Darlene Era

When ABC canceled the reboot on May 22, insiders revealed that the network was already exploring ways to rebrand the show. The focus would shift to Darlene, played by Sara Gilbert, instead of Roseanne. TMZ reported that Sara quickly reached out to cast members to gauge interest if ABC decided to move forward with the new project. And according to TMZ, John Goodman, aka Dan Conner, is "very interested" in the idea. ABC is doing everything it can to ensure those affected by the cancellation can continue working, especially the writers and crew who have been part of the show's success.

After the show's abrupt cancellation due to Roseanne's controversial tweet, fans took to social media with creative ideas for a spin-off. Twitter user @MarkBerman suggested renaming the series to The Conner Family and writing Roseanne Conner out of the show. Meanwhile, @BrettGursky proposed a storyline where Dan copes with Roseanne's loss and Jackie moves in to help the family.

Oh #Roseanne Bummed because the original show was such a fixture in my childhood and I hate when innocent people suffer because of trash. Instead of killing her off next season and having to deal with so much angst and drama, I say all of the previous season was Darlene’s shitty first novel. Roseanne died a while back and Darlene was having an especially hard time moving on. She thought the book would help but it only served to stifle her creativity. The Conners can deal with everyone coping and growing and leaning on each other while still celebrating Roseanne the character (as she used to be) without anyone having to deal with the mentally unhinged racist Roseanne the person. #abc #sitcom #photomanipulation #roseannebarred #saragilbert #lauriemetcalf #johngoodman #lecygoranson #michaelfishman

The Office star Mindy Kaling even offered her writing services to Laurie and John.
