“My dad was a total workaholic,” Brian Henson, son of the legendary Jim Henson, revealed exclusively to Closer Weekly in a recent issue. There wasn’t a hint of bitterness in his voice as he shared, “I have four siblings, and for us to spend time with our dad, we’d often end up hanging out in his studios and workshops. That’s where we grew up, really.”
But let’s be clear—Jim Henson wasn’t neglecting his kids. Far from it. He was showing them what it means to live a life full of creativity and passion. “He was always brimming with ideas, always feeling like there was so much more he needed to accomplish,” Brian, now 54, reminisced. “Dad used to say, ‘If something isn’t inspiring you, then go out and do something that does.’ That philosophy stuck with all of us. He was truly an inspiration to everyone who met him.”
Following in Dad’s Footsteps

Brian has taken the reins of the Jim Henson Company in Hollywood, continuing the legacy his dad started. It’s a dream come true for Brian, who grew up playing with his dad’s beloved Muppets. “Looking back, it’s kind of funny how my brother, John, and I would drag some of Dad’s priceless puppets into the sandbox when we were just four or five years old,” Brian chuckled. “Now, thinking about the value of those puppets, it’s kind of horrifying to realize what we put them through.”

But Brian wasn’t just playing around. He was creating, too. “I made the very first Muppet penguin,” he said with pride. “All of us kids would make our own Muppets for fun. Some were pretty bad, but others were so good that Dad would say, ‘Hey, we can use this one!’ When Frank Oz, the guy behind Miss Piggy, used my penguin in one of The Muppet Show’s musical numbers, I was over the moon!”
A Legacy Cut Short
Tragically, Jim Henson passed away suddenly at the age of 53 in 1990 from toxic shock syndrome and pneumonia. Brian was only 26 at the time. “I had this strange comfort in knowing that the whole world knew my dad and was grieving with me,” Brian reflected. “But when my mom passed away in 2013 after battling cancer, that was much harder. It was a very personal loss.”
