Marlene Koenig, a British and European royalty expert, shared her insights with HarpersBazaar.com, saying, “The Duchess of Cambridge has attended nearly every Garter ceremony since 2011.” She added, “Back in 2008, she attended as Catherine Middleton alongside Harry for William’s first appearance as a Knight of the Garter.” While the event was canceled last year, Kate was present as a spectator in 2017, making her absence this time even more noticeable.
Why Harry and Meghan Didn’t Attend Either
Now, let’s circle back to another notable absence—Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. Here’s the scoop: Harry isn’t part of the Order of the Garter yet, and he likely won’t be until Charles ascends to the throne. That means there’s no pressing need for Meghan to attend until that time. Koenig explained, “The Duke of Sussex is not a Knight of the Garter and will probably not be invested until his father is King.” She added, “The Duchess of Sussex has never attended and will probably not attend until Harry is named.”
What Exactly Is the Order of the Garter?
Kensington Palace gives us a glimpse into this grand event that takes place every June. According to their website, “The Queen and the Knights process in grand velvet robes, glistening insignia, and plumed hats, marking one of the most traditional ceremonies in the Queen’s calendar.” The event unfolds at Windsor Castle, where a marching band and Officers of the Order accompany the knights in elaborate ceremonial attire.
Queen Elizabeth, known as the “Sovereign of the Garter,” begins the day by formally investing any new Companions with the Order’s insignia in the Throne Room of the Castle. Afterward, there’s a lunch, followed by a service at St. George’s Chapel where new Companions are installed. Finally, the Sovereign and other members of the Order return to the Upper Ward of the castle in carriages and cars. It’s a day steeped in history and tradition, and fans are already buzzing about whether Kate and Meghan will grace the event next year.
