Bette Midler Takes A Tumble Onstage, But Don’t Worry—She’s Okay!

Bette Midler Is 'Fine" After Scary Fall During Hello, Dolly

Hey there, friends! So, something a little unexpected happened recently during a performance of Hello, Dolly!—Bette Midler, the queen of Broadway herself, took a little tumble on stage. Thankfully, though, she's doing just fine now, and she even took to Twitter to let her fans know everything's okay.

Now, this didn’t just happen randomly. During the Thursday, Sept. 14 performance, something went awry with the set pieces. Two of them collided, forcing Bette to make a quick escape. Unfortunately, in her haste, she stumbled and fell. But you know Bette—she's a trooper! After a short pause, the show resumed, and she continued shining brightly on stage as only she can.

What Bette Had to Say

Bette wasted no time reassuring her fans. Shortly after the incident, she posted a tweet to let everyone know that, despite the fall, she was perfectly fine. In her tweet, she explained, "You may hear I was in a little accident on stage tonight; two set pieces collided, I had to make a run for it, and I fell. But I'm fine." Classic Bette—calm, cool, and collected, even after a bit of a scare.

For those who might not know, Bette has been dazzling audiences as Dolly Gallagher Levi in Hello, Dolly! for quite a while now. Starting in June, though, Tony-winner Donna Murphy has been stepping in for Bette on Tuesday nights. And come October 15, Donna will take over more performances, including several evenings and matinees, according to Broadway.com.

Donna Murphy couldn’t be more excited about her new role. She told Huffington Post, "This is the perfect job for me at this point because it allows me to do what is most important in terms of my daughter and in terms of work. And how amazing to be able to actually do it in the theater, which is a kind of home for me and which I’ve missed greatly!" Donna added, "So I’m really excited and thrilled about every element of it. I’m not saying that I’m never going to do eight shows again. I’m just saying that I’ll only do it when it’s right for my daughter and myself."

    From Accidents to Awards

Before this little mishap, Bette had already been celebrating some major wins. Just a few months earlier, she took home the Tony Award for Best Leading Actress in a Musical. During her unforgettable acceptance speech, she said, "I’m so privileged, I’m so honored. I hope I don’t cry. Thank you to the Tony voters, many of whom I’ve actually dated... I’m so grateful for the outpouring of love and affection—I can’t remember the last time I had so much smoke blown up my a*s, but there’s no more room." Talk about a memorable moment!
