Cher's Journey Through Love And Life: A Story Of Independence And Heart

Cher Talks Her Relationships and Marriages to Sonny Bono and Gregg Allman

Cher, at 71, doesn’t need to turn back time — she’s thriving! Sure, the legendary singer might be missing true love, but don’t worry, because Closer Weekly has the scoop that the romantic Cher is still very much open to finding lasting love. Josiah Howard, author of Cher: Strong Enough, told Closer that Cher is as old-fashioned as it gets. Candlelit dinners? Absolutely. Movie nights with pizza at home? Totally her vibe. And let’s not forget, Cher waits until she’s in love before getting intimate. That’s old-school romance for you!

Cher has enjoyed every moment of her past romances, but she’s clear about her preferences: she’s all about relationships, not flings. Her relationships usually last around two and a half to three years, but when it comes to deeper commitment, things tend to shift. Yet, she hasn’t given up on love. Her commitment issues, according to insiders, might stem from her complicated relationship with her father, John Sarkisian, whom she didn’t meet until she was 11. This absence has left her questioning men’s love for her and feeling undeserving of it. But Cher’s not one to let the past hold her back. She’s ready for love, and she knows that if grass can grow through cement, love can find her again.

Cher’s Early Romance: Falling for Sonny Bono

When Cher met Sonny Bono at the tender age of 16, he was 27 and already a stabilizing force in her life. “He was the most stable person I’d ever known. I was the young student, always listening, watching how he dealt with stuff,” Cher has said. They tied the knot in 1964 and welcomed their daughter, Chastity (now son Chaz), four years later. But as their fame grew, Cher’s need for independence clashed with Sonny’s controlling nature. “He didn’t want me to grow up or have any freedom. I wasn’t allowed to do anything except work. I should never have been married to him. We should have just been best friends,” she reminisced.

    Cher's Next Adventure: Gregg Allman

After Sonny, Cher moved on to music mogul David Geffen, who helped her launch her solo career. Their romance was intense but short-lived. David later came out as gay in 1992. Enter Allman Brothers Band guitarist Gregg Allman, whom Cher married shortly after her divorce from Sonny. Being with Gregg was a refreshing change for the then-28-year-old Cher, who relished the freedom of being with someone her own age. However, Gregg's heroin addiction became a challenge they couldn’t overcome, especially after welcoming their son Elijah Blue in 1976.
