Age brings wisdom, and no one knows that better than Marlo Thomas. As she prepares to celebrate her 80th birthday on November 21, the legendary actress is reflecting on her journey, her father Danny Thomas' enduring influence, and the lessons she's learned over the years. Marlo, who made a name for herself as the star and producer of That Girl, recently opened up to Closer Weekly at the Paley Center for Media's event, "Better Than Ever: Actresses Are Fighting Ageism — and Winning," in New York City.
Sticking to What You Believe In
Marlo’s life philosophy centers around staying true to your convictions. "My biggest life lesson is that you should really stick to what you believe in," she exclusively told Closer Weekly. "There will always be people who try to steer you in different directions, but it's crucial not to give up on what you believe. It's your truth, and that's what matters most." Her words ring especially true as she reflects on the 26 years since her father's passing, a period that has shaped her perspective on life and legacy.

Life Lessons from a Beloved Father
Marlo has always been deeply connected to her father, and his passing left an indelible mark on her life. She shared some of the advice that continues to guide her today. "When my father died, I received a letter from Mike Nichols that changed everything for me," Marlo revealed. "He wrote, 'All the things you wish you had said, all the news, the thanks, you can still tell him — because the people we love stay with us.'" These words have helped her carry her father's memory forward with grace and strength.
Gratitude as a Way of Life
As Marlo looks back on her life, she finds herself embracing gratitude more than ever before. "My dad used to say I was born with rose-colored glasses on, and that's just who I am," she said. "As I've grown older, I've discovered that gratitude has become a cornerstone of my life." Today, Marlo shares her life with her husband, Phil Donahue, and their five stepchildren, and she cherishes every moment they have together.
"Phil and I have these huge windows in our home, and every morning when I open the shades, I look out and feel so grateful to be alive," she added. "I'm grateful for this world, for the man I love, and for our health. Gratitude gives you that extra energy, that extra spark to keep going." Her positivity and zest for life are truly inspiring.
