Melanie Griffith Reveals Epilepsy Diagnosis

Beloved actress Melanie Griffith is stepping into the spotlight to talk about a personal health challenge she's faced for years. In an emotional interview, the 60-year-old revealed her journey with epilepsy, a condition she kept private until now.

A Scary Diagnosis at the Cannes Film Festival

Back in 2011, during the glitz and glamour of the Cannes Film Festival, Melanie experienced something frightening. She had not one, but two seizures, an event that left her shaken. "I had this major grand mal seizure, and they rushed me to the hospital in Cannes," she recounted during the Women’s Brain Health Initiative panel on October 18 in Beverly Hills. "Then they brought me back to the boat. But it wasn't over. I had another seizure, and I had to return to the hospital. That's when they conducted the EEG and started to take it seriously," she explained.

    Years of Misdiagnosis

Melanie described the frustrating experience of living with undiagnosed epilepsy for years. "When I came back to the U.S., I was finally diagnosed with epilepsy. For 20 years, no one paid enough attention to even consider it as a possibility," she said. "I was living with seizures without knowing what they were, and that's a scary place to be."

A Life of Stress and Struggles

Even though Melanie hasn't had a seizure in three years, she admitted that her past struggles were closely tied to stress. "It's been three years since my last seizure," she shared. "As women, we juggle so much—family, career, kids, housework. It's exhausting. I haven't had a proper night's sleep in 35 years. My sleep cycle is completely messed up. Every seizure I had was triggered by extreme stress." She noted that after divorcing her husband of nearly 20 years, Antonio Banderas, she's found a healthier, more balanced life.

Despite the challenges, Melanie expressed gratitude for the healthcare she received. "I thank God that I'm in a position where I could find the best, most advanced medical care," she said. "But imagine if I were living in poverty with four kids and couldn't make ends meet. If I had a seizure, what would I do?" she questioned. "How does the average person, man or woman, get the help they need?" We're so glad Melanie is feeling better and using her platform to bring awareness to this important issue.
