Hey there, TV fans! If you're like me, you're probably still reeling from the drama-packed 13th season of Grey's Anatomy. Let's dive into what happened to one of our favorite docs, Alex Karev, portrayed by the talented Justin Chambers. Spoiler alert: his storyline was nothing short of explosive and left us on the edge of our seats heading into Season 14, which premiered on Thursday, Sept. 28!
In the Season 12 finale, things took a dramatic turn for Alex when he stumbled upon his girlfriend, Jo Wilson—played by the incredible Camilla Luddington—having what appeared to be a deep conversation with Andrew DeLuca, played by Giacomo Gianniotti. Here's the kicker: Jo was drunk and opening up about her past, including her abusive ex-husband and the fact that she'd been using a fake name. Unfortunately, Alex misinterpreted the whole scene, lost his cool, and ended up beating up DeLuca so badly that he ended up in the hospital. Talk about a cliffhanger! Fans everywhere were dying to know how this would play out in Season 13.
As Season 13 kicked off, Alex was desperate to confide in Meredith Grey, played by the legendary Ellen Pompeo, while the hospital staff scrambled to care for DeLuca. Meredith, unsurprisingly, wasn't thrilled with Alex's actions and felt uneasy about keeping his secret. This tension only added to the already chaotic atmosphere at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.

Alex's Legal Troubles Begin
Alex's life spiraled further when he was slapped with felony assault charges. Enter Dr. Miranda Bailey, portrayed by the always-awesome Chandra Wilson, who had the unenviable task of deciding Alex's fate within the hospital. She ultimately decided to remove him from surgeries and demote him to the Denny Duquette Memorial Clinic, where he spent much of the early part of the season. Meanwhile, Jo and Alex's relationship was on shaky ground, leading Jo to once again lean on DeLuca for support. As the weeks went by, it became evident that DeLuca had started to develop feelings for Jo, adding another layer of complexity to the situation.
The Trial Approaches
As Alex's trial loomed closer, Jo became increasingly anxious about the possibility of being subpoenaed. In an attempt to prevent this, she revealed her secret marriage to Alex, hoping he would accept a plea deal and serve two years in jail. Fans were left hanging for two long months before the winter premiere, eagerly waiting to see how the trial would unfold.
When the show finally returned, it was the day before Alex's trial. After an off-site case, Dr. Arizona Robbins, played by Jessica Capshaw, and Miranda informed Jo that Alex was taking a plea deal. This news left Jo feeling sick to her stomach. In the following episode, Meredith discovered that Alex's trial had been indefinitely postponed, leading her to assume he had taken the plea and was now in jail. Imagine her surprise when she got home from work and found him asleep in her bed!

It turned out that DeLuca dropped the charges, claiming he did so because Jo had been through enough. This decision allowed Alex to reclaim his position at the hospital, and eventually, he and Jo made amends. But just when things seemed to be settling down, Alex hired a private investigator to track down Jo's ex-husband, Paul Sadler. Despite locating him and attending a conference where Sadler was present, Alex wisely chose to walk away from the situation. This decision left Alex's storyline wide open heading into Season 14. Will he and Jo reunite? Or will he meet someone new? The suspense is killing us!
