Alright, let's talk about one of the most iconic medical dramas on television: Grey's Anatomy. If you're a fan of the show, you probably associate it with the city of Seattle—it's where Meredith Grey and her fellow doctors work, live, and deal with all the drama. But guess what? Most of the show isn't actually filmed in the rainy Pacific Northwest. Instead, it's shot under the sun in Southern California. Surprising, right? Let's dive deeper into this and uncover the truth behind the locations that bring Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital to life.
Seattle on Screen, But Not in Reality
Now, I know what you're thinking: "How can a show set in Seattle not be filmed there?" Well, it's true. While Seattle is the backdrop for the fictional Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital, the majority of the show's scenes are actually shot in Los Angeles. But don't worry, the producers sprinkle in a little Seattle magic here and there to keep things authentic. For example, back in Season 14, the cast made a special trip to Seattle, and fans were thrilled to see them posting pictures from the city. Jesse Williams, who plays Dr. Jackson Avery, even shared a photo on Instagram with Ellen Pompeo and Justin Chambers, showing off the Seattle Great Wheel. The caption read, “#Squad #Work #Eat #Play #Live #Seattle life ain't stale.” It was a rare moment of the cast truly being in Seattle, but for the most part, they’re in sunny LA.

LA: The Real Home of Grey Sloan Memorial
When it comes to the day-to-day filming of Grey's Anatomy, Los Angeles is where the magic happens. The majority of the show's interior scenes are shot at Prospect Studios in Los Feliz, just east of Hollywood. This studio is home to six massive sound stages that house the hospital's operating rooms, hallways, and reception areas. Interestingly, General Hospital is also filmed here, so if you're a soap opera fan, you might recognize the location. It's like a little medical drama hub in LA!
Bringing Seattle Into the Mix
While most of the show is filmed in LA, the producers do make an effort to incorporate some real-life Seattle locations. For instance, some exterior shots of Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital are filmed at the Veterans Administration Sepulveda Ambulatory Care Center in North Hills, California. This real-life medical facility provides a convincing backdrop for the hospital's exterior scenes. However, the majority of the action still takes place in Los Feliz. But let's not forget about Meredith's iconic house, known as the "Intern House." That's located in Seattle's Queen Anne neighborhood at 303 W. Comstock Street. And the hospital's rooftop helipad? That's actually on top of KOMO Plaza in Seattle. So while the show may not be fully shot in Seattle, it does sprinkle in some authentic touches to keep the story grounded.
At the end of the day, whether Grey's Anatomy is filmed in Seattle or LA doesn't really matter. What matters is the incredible storytelling, the unforgettable characters, and the drama that keeps us coming back for more. As long as Meredith, Jackson, and the rest of the crew are on our screens, we're happy. So here's to many more seasons of Grey's Anatomy!
