Let’s talk about love, relationships, and the choices couples make when it comes to tying the knot—or not. At 48, Anne Heche and her boyfriend of a decade, 52-year-old James Tupper, are proof that love doesn’t always need a formal title. Despite being together for ten years, the couple has no immediate plans to exchange vows, and honestly? They’re perfectly content with how things are.
When asked about their unique relationship status, Anne joked, “Eternally engaged is fantastic.” She went on to reveal, “Every year I get a new ring, and I’m not kidding.” James chimed in during an exclusive interview with Closer Weekly, confessing, “I feel pressure to get re-engaged.” But here’s the thing: the couple isn’t just saying this for show. Their arrangement works because it’s built on mutual respect, understanding, and a shared worldview.
Love in Its Purest Form

For Anne and James, their connection runs deep. As James explained, “We discovered we see the world in a similar way.” This shared perspective has only strengthened their bond over the years. The couple moved in together back in 2007, and they’ve been raising their eight-year-old son, Atlas, born in March 2009, as a team ever since.
A Journey Through Love and Relationships
Before finding love with James, Anne’s life was anything but simple. She left her ex-husband, Coleman Laffoon, in 2007 to be with the Big Little Lies actor. Their marriage lasted from 2001 until their divorce was finalized in 2009. Anne and Coleman share a son, Homer, now 15. Of course, Anne’s romantic history also includes her high-profile relationship with talk show host Ellen DeGeneres, which lasted from 1997 until 2000. As the former Another World star, Anne has always been in the spotlight, but she’s chosen her partners wisely, focusing on genuine connections rather than societal expectations.

Marriage Isn’t for Everyone
Interestingly, James has also been married before, which has only reinforced Anne’s decision to avoid the traditional route. During an interview with The New York Times, Anne admitted, “I have quite a collection [of rings],” referring to her growing stash of engagement rings. “Besides, I’ve been married before, and so has he. I don’t know what either of us would gain or what would change that would benefit us.”

But don’t count them out just yet! Anne hasn’t completely ruled out the possibility of walking down the aisle someday. In fact, she joked, “When I’m 60, I’m happy to walk down the aisle!” For now, though, the couple is content with their unconventional but deeply meaningful relationship.
