Debra Messing, for one, didn’t hold back after the show when she took to Instagram to express her disappointment. “I was completely dismayed by Megyn’s comments,” she wrote. Now, there’s chatter that Debra might’ve landed in hot water with NBC for airing her grievances so publicly. Let's dive into what went down.
According to a network executive who spoke with Page Six, Debra received a not-so-subtle warning from someone high up in NBC Entertainment, specifically from Bob Greenblatt. “Debra was told to cut it out,” the source said. However, Debra’s team isn’t biting. What Happened During the Interview?
During the sit-down, Megyn Kelly decided to bring a superfan of Will & Grace on stage to meet the cast. Now, this is where it got a little awkward. Megyn asked the fan, Russell Turner, “Is it true that you became a lawyer, and you became gay, because of [Eric’s character] Will?” She then added, “I don’t know about the lawyer thing, but I think that the Will & Grace thing and the gay thing is going to work out great.”

That line didn’t sit well with a lot of people. Social media lit up with criticism, with many calling out Megyn for her tone-deaf comments. One person wrote, “And the award for most cringeworthy talk show debut goes to… Megyn Kelly for asking a Will & Grace fan if the show is why they ‘became gay.’” Another added, “Megyn Kelly said ‘the gay thing’ in front of the Will & Grace cast. She’s clueless.”

Debra Messing Speaks Out
On Tuesday, Sept. 26, a fan reached out to Debra Messing on Instagram, asking why she and her co-stars appeared on Megyn Kelly Today. Debra didn’t mince words in her response. “Honestly, I didn’t know it was [Megyn Kelly] until that morning. The itinerary just said Today show appearance. Regret going on. Dismayed by her comments,” she wrote.
An NBC insider later tried to defend Megyn’s approach, telling Page Six, “It was very much tongue-in-cheek, which was abundantly clear to the ‘superfan’ who was thrilled to be a part of the show and the audience. And it was even clearer when she devoted much of the interview to asking the show’s creators how proud they were of the positive social impact of Will & Grace and the progress it brought about for gay rights.”
