Anticipation Builds for Will & Grace Reboot
As fans of the iconic NBC sitcom Will & Grace gear up for the highly anticipated Thursday, Sept. 28 premiere of the reboot, a big question looms: How will the show handle the absence of Grace Adler's beloved mom, Bobbi Adler? Played by the legendary Debbie Reynolds, Bobbi was a fan favorite. But with Debbie tragically passing away last year at the age of 84, fans are curious how the show will address her absence. Luckily, co-creators David Kohan and Max Mutchnick have some answers.
During an appearance at the Tribeca TV Festival, Mutchnick opened up about Debbie Reynolds, sharing heartfelt memories of the late actress. "Debbie, may she rest in peace. I mean, she was such an angel," he said. But Kohan, ever the jokester, had a different take. "She was so not an angel," Kohan quipped, recalling Debbie's larger-than-life personality. This playful back-and-forth gives fans a glimpse of the humor and warmth that made Will & Grace a household name.

Debbie Reynolds: The Real Deal
Mutchnick went on to share a story that paints a vivid picture of Debbie's personality. "She was a broad," he said, correcting himself. "When we hired her, she showed up that morning with this lady. This lady was always with her, and Debbie was missing one of the arms of her glasses, yelling at the other woman. She walked into our office and said, 'Tell them I’m here to meet with the guys, I’m Burt Reynolds’ younger sister.’" It's moments like this that remind us just how much Debbie Reynolds brought to the table — and the set.
And then there's the story Kohan recalls, one that perfectly captures Debbie's no-nonsense attitude. "We sat down with Debbie Reynolds in our office, and I said, 'Hey, will you let us dye your hair red?' She replied, 'Dye my hair red? I have two hairs on my body, one’s on my head, one’s on my p—y, and they’re both gray,'" Mutchnick said. "That’s who Debbie Reynolds was, and she wore a beautiful red wig. I miss her." It's these candid moments that make Debbie's memory so vivid and unforgettable.
A Legacy Remembered
As we all know, Debbie Reynolds passed away last December after suffering a stroke caused by a ruptured blood vessel in her brain. Hypertension was also listed as an underlying cause. What made her passing even more heartbreaking was the timing — just one day after her daughter, Star Wars legend Carrie Fisher, passed away at the age of 60 due to complications from sleep apnea. The world lost two incredible women in such a short span of time, but their legacies continue to shine brightly.
View this post on InstagramDebbie went to be with Carrie. She always worried about her. Carrie left too soon and now they are together again. My heart is literally broken. For 8 years she was my mom. She was pure energy & light when she came on stage. She was loving, and bawdy, and playful- a consummate pro- old school and yet had the work ethic and investment in her craft of a new fiery up and comer. She was always running off to Vegas or somewhere else “on the road” to be a hoofer, to sing and dance and make people laugh. She performed 340 days out of the year. An inspiration on every level. A Legend of course, the epitome of clean cut American optimism, dancing with Gene Kelly as an equal, a warrior woman who never stopped working. A devoted mother and grandmother, and aunt and great aunt, and friend. I lost my mom a few years ago. She loved that Debbie was my TV mom. I hope they find each other and hug and kiss and my mom says, “I got you, Debbie. Carrie’s waiting for you.” RIP Bobbie Adler. ❤

Not long after Debbie’s passing, her TV daughter, Debra Messing, paid tribute to her on Instagram. "My heart is literally broken. For 8 years she was my mom. She was pure energy & light when she came on stage," Debra wrote. "She was loving, and bawdy, and playful — a consummate pro — old school and yet had the work ethic and investment in her craft of a new fiery up and comer." It's clear that Debbie Reynolds left an indelible mark on everyone she worked with, and her legacy continues to inspire.
