But recently, Paul Burrell, Princess Diana’s former butler, stirred up some controversy by critiquing Kate in a way that’s making headlines. Paul, who served Diana from 1987 until her tragic death in 1997, had some pretty strong words about Kate. He says she’s a lovely person and clearly adores her husband, but she’s missing that certain "magic" that made Diana so special.

Speaking to 9 News, Paul opened up about his thoughts on Kate. At 59 years old, he’s seen a lot in the royal world, and his opinion carries weight. “She’s a lovely, lovely girl… she totally adores her husband, they’re devoted to each other,” he explained. “But that extra something, which you would call the ‘X-factor,’ it’s not there.” He went on to say that this quality isn’t something everyone has. “I met Mother Teresa, she had it. Pope John Paul II had it. The Queen has it. Diana certainly had it. Kate doesn’t.”

Paul Burrell Faces Backlash
Earlier this week, Diana’s longtime confidante appeared on Australia’s The Today Show, and the host, Karl Stefanovic, didn’t hold back. “We have a lot to talk about this morning, but first I want to ask you about your comments about Kate Middleton… That’s way too harsh, isn’t it? How dare you even say that,” Karl questioned, clearly unimpressed. Paul, caught off guard, defended himself by saying, “Well, because you see, standing beside someone like Diana, I saw something so special and so magical that I can’t — I have never seen that.”

Karl wasn’t letting Paul off the hook, asking, “How often have you stood beside Kate?” Paul admitted, “No, I haven’t. I don’t know Kate. I just see her the way you see her, through a lens.” He tried to smooth things over by saying his comments were taken out of context and praised Kate, calling her a “beautiful lady” who “should be Queen of England.” But Karl wasn’t buying it. “With respect, you are not taking anything out of context, you are saying it again and again and again that she doesn’t measure up to these other people in front of the camera. It is ridiculous,” Karl countered.
Karl Comes to Kate’s Defense
Karl wasn’t done. He added, “Why don’t you leave Kate alone? Do you have some sort of oxygen deprivation at the moment? I mean, come on. Leave her alone. She is a mother-of-two doing the very best she can. She is awesome.” Since Diana’s death in 1997, Paul’s relationship with the royal family has been complicated. He’s done several interviews that some have found explosive. Back in 2002, he was charged with theft over Princess Diana’s property, but the case was eventually dropped.
Paul’s Past Comments About Diana
During a stint on the reality show Celebrity Big Brother in 2004, Paul described Diana as “lonely” and “desperate.” He also penned a memoir in 2003 called A Royal Duty, which offered a behind-the-scenes look at life in the palace. Whether you agree with Paul or not, it’s clear that his comments have stirred up strong feelings on both sides.
