Prince Harry, the charming red-haired royal, recently dropped some unexpected thoughts about young people and their relationship with technology. Is he suggesting that even royals aren’t immune to the digital age’s pull? Let’s dive deeper into what the Duke of Sussex had to say in a candid interview.
Prince Harry Calls Out Youth for Phone Overuse
In a recent interview, Prince Harry opened up about his concerns regarding young people's habits, particularly their reliance on smartphones. The royal, known for his candid nature, pointed out that today's youth are glued to their devices far too often. "I read recently that young people check their phones at least 150 times per day," Harry revealed during a speech focused on mental health on July 6, as reported by People. "I’m sure we could all be more effective and efficient if we took a moment to process our thoughts rather than rushing from one thing to the next," the 32-year-old added.

Prince Harry’s comments extend beyond just phone use—they touch on his own personal battles with mental health. In the past, he's been open about the struggles he faced after the tragic death of his mother, Princess Diana. "I didn’t know what was wrong with me," Harry admitted. "[I was] very close to a complete breakdown on numerous occasions." His candor has resonated with many who have faced similar challenges.
Harry’s Journey Through Mental Health Struggles
Harry's openness about his mental health journey hasn’t just been about his own experience—it's been a call to action for others to seek help. "Then I started to have a few conversations and then, all of a sudden, all of this grief that I’d never processed came to the forefront," Harry explained. "I was like, 'there’s actually a lot of stuff here I need to deal with.'”
Harry eventually found ways to cope with his mother’s passing, which included serving in Afghanistan after years of experiencing panic attacks. "If you lose your mom at the age of 12, you have got to deal with it," Harry confessed. "The idea that 20 years later I still hadn’t really… that 15, 17 years later I still hadn’t dealt with it. Afghan was the moment where I was like, 'Right, deal with it.’”
Harry Advocates for Normalizing Mental Health Conversations
In his recent speech, Harry emphasized the importance of continuing the conversation around mental health. "I cannot tell you how pleased William, Catherine, and I are that the dial seems to have shifted and that there is now greater understanding, compassion, and kindness for anyone who opens up about their struggles," Harry said. "But let’s not kid ourselves that the job is done—there is much, much more that we can do at every level to make conversations about mental health as commonplace as those about physical health."
