In a deeply emotional BBC documentary titled Diana, 7 Days, Prince William and Prince Harry open up about their mother Princess Diana's tragic death and the moment they were told she had passed away. It’s hard to imagine the weight of such news, but Harry, now 32, shared how his father, Prince Charles, was the one who broke the news to him and his brother back in August 1997. “One of the hardest things for a parent to do is to tell your children that their other parent has died. How do you even begin to explain something like that? It’s almost unimaginable,” Harry reflected.

Harry continued, “Our dad was there for us—he was the one parent we had left, and he tried his best to make sure we were protected and looked after. But let’s not forget, he was grieving too. It was a shared grieving process for all of us.” Watch the video below to see William and Harry’s reactions to learning about their mother’s passing.

Protecting the Princes
William, now 35, shared insights into how his family handled the aftermath of Diana’s death. “At the time, my grandmother, Queen Elizabeth, wanted to shield her two grandsons and my father as well. She deliberately removed newspapers and other media so there was nothing in the house to read. We didn’t know what was happening out there. Back then, we didn’t have smartphones, so it wasn’t like we could just check the news. Thankfully, we had the privacy to grieve in our own way, to collect our thoughts, and have that space away from the public eye. We had no idea the reaction to her death would be so overwhelming,” William explained.

Life Changed Forever
At the time of Diana’s death, William was just 15 years old, and his brother Harry was 12. The boys were on vacation with their father and grandparents at the royal family’s Balmoral Estate in Scotland. After the world learned of Diana’s passing, Queen Elizabeth faced criticism for keeping her grandsons away from the press in Scotland rather than bringing them back to London immediately. This decision sparked a debate about what was best for the young princes during such a traumatic time.

A Royal Decision
“All of us were in uncharted territory. My grandmother and my father believed it was best for us to stay in Balmoral, where we could take walks, have space, and find peace with the family. It was important for us not to be thrown into serious decisions or worries right away,” William elaborated. This decision, though criticized by some, allowed the young princes to process their grief privately before facing the world.
