Life has thrown its fair share of challenges at actor Val Kilmer, but the star has always managed to find a way to rise above the darkest moments. In a candid interview with Closer Weekly, Val revealed that he has triumphed over oral cancer and credited his artistic pursuits as a key part of his healing process.
Val shared with Closer that creating art provides him with a form of meditation. "It's a deeply personal experience for me," he said. "It's like writing poetry—sometimes I'll write a love poem, but mostly it's an exploration, a journey inward." This passion for creativity has been a constant companion throughout his life. "I've been making art since I was a kid. It brings me immense joy, and it's been a source of strength during tough times," he added.

Val's Inspirations: A Tribute to His Late Brother
Val attributes much of his inspiration to his late brother, Wesley, who tragically passed away in 1977 at the age of 15. "Wesley was an extraordinary talent—a comedian, artist, sculptor, animator, and filmmaker from the moment he could hold a pencil," Val reminisced. "He was a whirlwind of creativity, and his spirit has always been a driving force in my life. Losing him was devastating, but his memory fuels my passion for art and storytelling."

Val's Battle with Oral Cancer
News of Val's battle with oral cancer first surfaced in October 2016, when his close friend Michael Douglas inadvertently revealed his diagnosis. Val addressed his fans shortly after, explaining the situation. "Michael was probably just trying to help me because the press kept asking about my absence," Val said. "Yes, I did undergo treatment for cancer, and while my tongue is still healing, it's getting better every day. People might think I'm still unwell because my voice isn't quite back to normal, but I'm on the mend and feeling stronger."

Val's Focus on Family and Gratitude
Now that Val is healthier, he's channeling his energy into being the best father he can be to his two children, daughter Mercedes, 25, and son Jack, 22. "They're both incredibly intelligent and thoughtful individuals," Val beamed. "They inspire me every day." Through his struggles, Val has learned the importance of gratitude. "I've come to realize how precious life is," he reflected. "I'm more appreciative of the little things and the people who matter most."
