Here’s a story about courage, resilience, and living life to the fullest. Famed actor Alan Alda, best known for his iconic role on M*A*S*H, made a heartfelt confession on CBS This Morning. On Tuesday, July 31, he revealed something deeply personal—he’s been living with Parkinson’s disease for over three years. And let me tell you, his approach to this challenge is nothing short of inspiring.

Alan Alda Shares His Journey with Parkinson’s Disease

When asked how he’s doing, Alan didn’t hold back. “I’m doing great,” he told the co-hosts with a smile. “And you might be surprised to hear this, but I haven’t talked about my diagnosis publicly until now. I’ve been living with Parkinson’s disease for a while, but it hasn’t stopped me from doing what I love.”

What struck me most was his perspective. Instead of letting the diagnosis bring him down, Alan sees it as a challenge. “I’m not angry about it. It’s just another part of life, and I’ve had a full life since the diagnosis,” he explained. His positivity is truly remarkable, and it’s something we can all learn from.

Despite the challenges, Alan has kept himself busy and productive. In the three and a half years since his diagnosis, he’s continued to act, give talks, and even help others through his work at the Alda Center for Communicating Science at Stony Brook University. To top it off, he started a new podcast. That’s right—a podcast! This man isn’t slowing down anytime soon.

But there was something else weighing on Alan’s mind. He realized that keeping his condition private was becoming harder. “I’ve been on TV a lot lately talking about the podcast, and I noticed my thumb twitching in some shots. I thought, ‘It’s only a matter of time before someone writes a story about this from a sad angle.’ But that’s not where I am,” he confessed. It’s clear that Alan wanted to take control of the narrative and share his story on his own terms.

    The Early Signs and Diagnosis

Alan’s journey with Parkinson’s began subtly. He noticed an early symptom when he started acting out his dreams, but at the time, he didn’t think much of it. When he mentioned it to his doctor, the response was unexpected. “The doctor said, ‘Why do you want a scan? You don’t have any symptoms.’ But I knew myself. I wanted to catch anything early and deal with it before it got worse,” Alan recalled. Months later, that little twitch in his thumb confirmed what he suspected all along.

For those battling Parkinson’s, Alan has some wise words to share. “I want folks to know that this isn’t the end. Sure, it can be tough, especially when symptoms get severe, but in the early stages, it’s important not to let fear take over. You still have so much to offer,” he emphasized. Alan himself is proof of that. He’s taking boxing lessons three times a week, playing singles tennis a couple of times a week, and even marching to Sousa music, which he says is great for Parkinson’s.

    A Positive Outlook on Life

Alan’s attitude toward his condition is nothing short of inspiring. “Each day is different. Some days, you wake up and think, ‘Oh, it’s over! It’s gone!’ And then the next day, it’s back, maybe worse. But the key is to focus on what you can do,” he said. For Alan, it’s all about solving the puzzle of adapting to his new reality. “I enjoy solving puzzles. It’s like figuring out how to live a normal life while adapting to this new challenge. And let me tell you, it’s really fun,” he added with a chuckle.

In fact, he believes his life has become even more meaningful since the diagnosis. “It hasn’t stopped my life at all. If anything, it’s made it richer. I’ve accomplished so much more than I ever thought possible,” he shared. What an inspiration!
