Is the end of Alex Trebek’s legendary run on Jeopardy! approaching? Since 1984, Alex has been the face of one of television’s most iconic game shows. But during a recent interview with Fox’s OBJECTified, the beloved host hinted that his time on the show might be coming to an end. His current contract is set to expire in two years, and Alex admitted there’s “less than a 50/50 chance” he’ll re-sign after that. If that’s not enough to break your heart, when the 78-year-old was asked if he could imagine life without Jeopardy!, he simply replied, “Sure.”

Clarifying the Future: Alex Speaks Out

Don’t hit the panic button just yet. In a new interview with Closer Weekly, Alex clarified his earlier remarks, offering a bit more insight into his mindset. “I’ve never gotten tired of this job,” he explained, but added, “I do want to explore other opportunities.” Alex has always been about balance, and while Jeopardy! has been a huge part of his life, it’s clear he’s ready to expand his horizons. This isn’t the first time he’s broached the subject of retirement, either. Back in 2016, during an exclusive chat with Closer Weekly, Alex admitted he had no immediate plans to step down but acknowledged the thought occasionally crossed his mind.

Why Alex Loves Hosting Jeopardy!

For Alex, hosting Jeopardy! is more than just a job—it’s a passion. “As long as my skills haven’t diminished and I still enjoy it, I’ll keep hosting,” he shared in that 2016 interview. And let’s be honest, Alex’s charm and wit have only grown stronger over the years. “I’d love to win another Emmy,” he joked, referring to his last win for Outstanding Game Show Host back in 2008. When he does eventually retire, Alex has some pretty laid-back plans. “I’d like to grow turnips in California’s Central Coast area,” he revealed. “And I enjoy fixing things around the house. Plus, I’m pretty involved with several charities.”

A Legacy That Will Live On

Alex knows that Jeopardy! will continue to thrive long after he steps away from the podium. “Jeopardy! will remain on the air for years to come, even after I’m gone,” he confidently stated. In fact, he’s already started thinking about potential successors. During his interview with OBJECTified, Alex mentioned a few names, including Alex Faust, the play-by-play commentator for the LA Kings, and Laura Coates, a legal analyst who frequently appears on cable news networks. “They should consider him,” Alex said of Faust, highlighting the qualities he believes are essential for the next host.

From hosting a local quiz show in Toronto called Reach for the Top over 50 years ago to becoming the face of one of TV’s most iconic game shows, Alex has built a legacy that few can match. “There isn’t anything out there that I’d trade for this job,” he reflected. And while the thought of retirement may be on the horizon, Alex will always cherish his time on Jeopardy!. “I get to spend a half-hour each day with some of the brightest people around, and that’s something I truly enjoy,” he said. “There’s a warmth and familiarity because I’m in people’s homes five nights a week. I’ve become part of their family.”
