Hey there, friends. I want to take a moment to talk about something deeply personal that's been going on in the life of someone we all know and love—Carson Daly. Recently, Carson shared some incredibly tough news with his fans and followers. His stepfather, Dick Caruso, passed away on October 24th. And if that wasn't enough, just weeks before, Carson also lost his mother, Pattie Daly Caruso. These back-to-back losses must be absolutely devastating for him. To make things even more complicated, Carson’s biological father passed away when he was just a young boy, making Dick the most influential male figure in his life. It's heartbreaking to think about how much Carson has had to endure in such a short period of time.
In a heartfelt Instagram post, Carson shared his feelings about the loss of his stepfather. He wrote, “Pops passed away today with absolute dignity and pride.” He went on to say, “The greatest man we ever knew. Our hero. He exemplified great faith, loyalty to family, and hard work. He provided us all with so much. We’re grateful. His legacy lives on in all of us and anyone who had the pleasure of meeting him. He’s reunited with mom now. Our faith remains strong. Thanks for your continued thoughts and prayers.” Those words really hit home, don’t they? It's clear that Dick Caruso was not just a stepfather to Carson but a guiding light and a role model.

Just a month prior, Carson paid tribute to his mother, Pattie, who passed away on September 17th. In a touching gesture, Carson had his Today show co-host, Matt Lauer, read a statement on her behalf. The statement read, “It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our mother, wife, grandmother, Pattie Daly Caruso. She passed away peacefully on Sunday, Sept. 17, 2017. Kiki, as she was known to her grandchildren and many others, touched so many lives with her kindness, her giant spirit, and her love of life. She will be terribly missed by her family and the world, but her spark will shine for eternity.” Pattie's death was reported to be due to a heart attack, according to a family spokesperson.
Pattie wasn't just Carson's mom; she was a local celebrity in her own right. For 25 years, she hosted her own talk show, Valley Views, in California. Her show was a platform for her to interview some pretty big names, like Barbara Sinatra and Arnold Palmer. Pattie was known for her philanthropy and her vibrant television career, but she always considered her family to be her greatest achievement. In her own words, she said, “I don’t look back and wish I’d had a bigger career or whatever. I’ve just loved, loved being a mom. To think that I might be doing something right is the most wonderful, thrilling thing that I could hear, period.”
Carson's Strength Amidst Loss
Carson has always looked up to his mom as a source of inspiration and strength. When Pattie was just 35, her first husband, Jim Daly, was diagnosed with bladder cancer. Later in life, Pattie battled breast cancer, undergoing aggressive treatment and a mastectomy. Despite these challenges, she remained resilient. Carson once said, “Some people will say, it’s not the cross — it’s how you bear it. Her life is a constant example for me of how to bear that cross.” Pattie's courage and grace have undoubtedly shaped the man Carson is today.

It's been a tough few weeks for the Today show family, with the passing of both Pattie Daly Caruso and Kathie Lee Gifford’s mother, Joan Epstein. Our thoughts and prayers are with Carson and the entire Today show team during this difficult time. Loss is never easy, but remembering the legacy of those we've lost can help us find strength in our grief.
