Behind The Scenes Of 'Taxi': Relationships, Feuds, And Lasting Friendships

Taxi Cast Shares Their Fond Show Memories

Marilu Henner has always been candid about her experiences on the set of Taxi. As the lone female co-star when the show premiered in 1978, she had her pick of the litter. During the show’s five-year run, she wasn’t shy about dating her costars. "Within three weeks, Tony Danza and I were dating," she once revealed about the charming ex-boxer. "And let's not forget Judd Hirsch, who I also dated the same year. With 77 guys on set and just me, you think I wouldn’t have dated at least two of them in five years? Please!" Marilu’s candidness about her romantic adventures adds a layer of intrigue to the show's behind-the-scenes dynamics.

But not all relationships on the set were as harmonious. Andy Kaufman, the quirky stand-up artist who played the eccentric Latka Gravas, had his own unique way of working. He refused to rehearse and only showed up on Fridays, which understandably irritated his theater-trained colleagues. It wasn't always smooth sailing, but somehow they made it work.

Despite Andy's unconventional approach, his scenes with Carol Kane, who played Latka's love interest Simka, somehow clicked. "Before we shot scenes, I would always say to him, 'I got mad because you didn’t want to rehearse,'" Carol Kane has shared. "And he would reply, 'I’m sorry, but I can’t rehearse.' Yet, by the time we went out to play a couple, we were in sync, and it was kind of fantastic." This unique dynamic contributed to the show’s unforgettable chemistry.

Not everyone was as accommodating. Judd Hirsch, who played the sardonic cabbie Alex Reiger, had his patience tested by Andy’s quirks. "At one point, Judd and Andy almost came to blows," Frank Lovece, co-author of Taxi: The Official Fan’s Guide, revealed. Despite these tensions, the show's ensemble cast delivered a level of chemistry that remains unparalleled.

With Danny DeVito as the diminutive but commanding dispatcher Louie De Palma, Jeff Conaway as the self-absorbed actor Bobby Wheeler, and Christopher Lloyd as the spaced-out hippie Rev. Jim Ignatowski, the cast was a vibrant mix of personalities. "Judd didn’t see himself as the single star," Lovece explained. "He thought of it as an ensemble show, which gave the other actors a lot more room." This inclusive approach allowed each character to shine and contributed to the show’s success.
