Meghan Markle Passed On A Major Opportunity: The Inside Story

Anna Wintour Wanted Meghan Markle on Vogue's September Issue Cover

2018 was an incredible year for Meghan Markle. She married into the royal family, becoming the Duchess of Sussex, and captured the hearts of millions around the world. But according to reports from OK! Magazine, Meghan turned down a chance to make her year even more unforgettable. Apparently, Vogue Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour wanted Meghan to star on the coveted cover of the publication’s September issue—arguably the most prestigious issue of the year. Instead, the iconic spot went to Beyoncé, a global icon in her own right.

Why Did Meghan Say No?

According to insiders, Anna Wintour was eager to feature Meghan on the cover of Vogue. In fact, she went above and beyond to make it happen. Sources say Anna offered to photograph the cover wherever Meghan wanted and even volunteered to personally oversee the entire shoot and conduct the interview herself. That’s a pretty generous offer! But for reasons that remain unclear, Meghan declined. As a result, Vogue moved forward with Beyoncé, who delivered a stunning cover that made headlines worldwide.

    Royals and Vogue: A History

Had Meghan accepted the offer, she wouldn’t have been the first royal to grace the cover of Vogue. Back in June 2016, her sister-in-law, Kate Middleton, appeared on the cover of British Vogue to celebrate the magazine’s centenary. The issue featured a breathtaking 10-page spread showcasing Kate’s elegance and grace. At the time, editor-in-chief Alexandra Shulman expressed her excitement about collaborating with the Duchess of Cambridge. “It’s a huge honor and incredibly exciting for us to have HRH The Duchess of Cambridge featuring on the cover of British Vogue and as part of our centenary issue,” she said.

Shulman went on to describe the experience as deeply meaningful. “For me personally, it has been a wonderful opportunity to work with her on this project, and I am immensely proud of what we have produced. This special issue of the magazine is very close to my heart because it had to reflect on 100 years of British Vogue. I am hugely grateful that we were able to continue our tradition of outstanding royal portraiture with these pictures.”

Other Royal Appearances in Fashion Magazines

It’s worth noting that royals have a long history of appearing on the covers of high-profile fashion magazines. In 2016, Queen Elizabeth herself appeared on the cover of Vanity Fair, accompanied by her beloved corgis, to mark her 90th birthday. Princess Diana also famously graced the cover of Vanity Fair in July 1997, while Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie have appeared on Tatler magazine covers. Even Meghan’s husband, Prince Harry, has appeared on the cover of Town & Country magazine in February 2017.
