Let’s talk about Meryl Streep, the queen of Hollywood and a true icon in the world of acting. At 69, she could’ve easily decided to kick back and enjoy the fruits of her labor. With a record-breaking 21 Oscar nominations, she’s earned every bit of rest she could want. But no, Meryl isn’t done yet. “I could retire and start collecting a pension,” she jokes about her busy life balancing fame and family. “But the kids are out of the house, and the scripts keep coming.”

And boy, do they ever come! Meryl is set to dazzle audiences in the musicals "Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again" and "Mary Poppins Returns." She's also taking on her first TV series role in Season 2 of HBO's "Big Little Lies." In an exclusive chat with Closer, she shared, “I pretty much pick whatever I fall in love with, whatever speaks to me.” It’s clear that her passion for storytelling hasn’t faded one bit.

  • Meryl’s journey to self-confidence wasn’t always smooth sailing. Watching early scenes from her films at a tribute, she admits, “All I could see was this beautiful young woman who was anxious about whether she was too heavy or her nose was too big.” Reflecting on her younger self, she says, “I felt like saying to her, ‘Just relax, and it will all be OK.’” It’s a reminder that even the most celebrated among us have their moments of doubt.

Growing Up with Support and Encouragement

Meryl’s roots trace back to Summit, NJ, where she received unwavering emotional support from her artist mom, Mary, and pharmaceutical-executive dad, Harry Streep. “My parents were very encouraging,” she recalls fondly. “My mother took me to see every single show on Broadway. Those experiences shaped who I am today.”

By her mid-20s, Meryl was making waves on the New York stage. It was there she met and fell in love with co-star John Cazale. Tragically, John passed away from lung cancer at the young age of 42 in 1978. Heartbroken, Meryl found solace in the apartment of sculptor Don Gummer, a friend of one of her brothers. When Don returned, he recalls, “Pretty quickly I realized I was falling in love with her.” They tied the knot within a few months. Meryl gushes, “I found a great husband many years ago — I’m lucky in that way.”
