Meredith Vieira Speaks Out About Matt Lauer’s Potential TV Comeback
Former Today co-host Meredith Vieira didn’t mince words when asked about Matt Lauer’s rumored plans to "test the waters" for a possible TV comeback, as reported by Page Six. In an exclusive interview with Closer Weekly (available in the latest issue now!), Meredith shared her thoughts during the July 30 Summer Television Critics Association Press Tour for PBS' The Great American Read.
“It would probably be very difficult for him,” Meredith candidly told the magazine. Her response comes amidst ongoing discussions about Matt's future in the entertainment industry following his abrupt departure from Today last November due to allegations of inappropriate sexual behavior.
Time Heals Wounds, But Challenges Remain
Reflecting on the situation, Meredith added, “Time tends to heal situations and people evolve.” She acknowledged the possibility of change but emphasized the challenges Matt might face in rebuilding his career. “I don’t want to be an unforgiving person, but I think [his comeback] would be a tough road,” she explained. “I don’t want to wish ill of anybody, but I tend to support the women.”

Meredith Vieira Champions the #MeToo Movement
As a strong advocate for the #MeToo movement, Meredith has consistently spoken out in support of women sharing their stories about sexual misconduct. In a previous interview with People, she expressed her gratitude for the movement, saying, “I really appreciate the #MeToo Movement. I think it’s long overdue.”
“Clearly, there’s been a problem that has been ignored for far too long, and a lot of people have been hurt,” Meredith elaborated. “I think they deserve to have their truth told.” She went on to express her hopes for the future, adding, “What I hope happens from all of this is that we create a workplace where women and men will feel safe.”
Life After Today: Matt Lauer’s Low Profile
Since his firing from Today, Matt Lauer has largely kept a low profile, staying out of the spotlight as much as possible. The most recent sighting of the former TV anchor was during a three-mile paddleboarding race at Hamptons’ Havens Beach in Sag Harbor on Saturday, Aug. 2. Reports suggest that Matt appears to be in a very different place compared to his days on television.

“He just looks very, very sad. He used to be so friendly and chatty, just like he was on TV. Now he keeps his head down. You can tell he’s not really in the best place,” a source told In Touch. “He doesn’t look like he did when he was on TV. He’s skinny… It looks like he’s aged 10 years.”
