Pamela Smart, the central figure in Investigation Discovery’s captivating three-part series, Pamela Smart: An American Murder Mystery, is currently serving a life sentence for orchestrating the tragic 1991 death of her husband, Gregg Smart. Once upon a time, though, her life was filled with hope and promise. But how did it all go so wrong? Let’s dive into her story.
Early Days and a Fateful Encounter
Born Pamela Ann Wojas on August 16, 1967, in Coral Gables, Florida, Pam’s life took an unexpected turn when she met Gregg Smart on New Year’s Eve in 1986. At the time, Pam had recently moved to New Hampshire, and it was at a lively party where their paths first crossed. "The first time I saw Gregg was at a party," Pam recalls in an exclusive interview featured in An American Murder Mystery. "He was a friend of one of my friends. Gregg was very handsome, with big dimples, and he was always friendly to everyone." It wasn’t just his good looks that caught Pam’s eye, though. His easygoing nature and contagious smile made him instantly likable.

A Match Made in Rock 'n' Roll
Pam’s friend, Tracy Paris, paints a vivid picture of their early relationship: "They were fun, they would tease each other, they would laugh and be silly together. They were a good couple. They were well suited to each other." On the surface, Pam and Gregg seemed like an unlikely pair. Pam was driven and ambitious, while Gregg, as investigative reporter Diane Dimond explains, "was very outgoing, always with a smile on his face, and he loved a good party. He wasn’t so interested in going to college. He was never a good student." But they shared one major passion: rock music, particularly heavy metal. In fact, Pam named both her first car (a Honda CRX) and the Chinese Shih Tzu given to her by Gregg "Halen" after the legendary Eddie Van Halen. It was this shared love of rock music that initially drew them together.
