On June 27, 2018, the patriarch of the legendary Jackson family passed away at the age of 89 after a valiant battle with terminal cancer. Just a few months before his passing, Joe shared some heartfelt words with Closer Weekly during what turned out to be one of his final red carpet interviews.
Joe Jackson's Final Words on His Family's Future
On March 4, Joe attended the prestigious Elton John AIDS Foundation Academy Award Party. It was there that he spoke to Closer about his vision for the future of his extraordinary family. “All of my family is famous and known everywhere—not just in one place, but literally all over the world,” Joe proudly declared. “And I want them to keep that momentum going. I hope they continue to shine and inspire others.”

A Legacy of Love and Music
Joe Jackson is, without a doubt, the father of some of the most influential entertainers in history. He shares this legacy with his late son, Michael Jackson, often referred to as the "King of Pop," and his daughter Janet Jackson, a global pop icon. Joe married Katherine Jackson in 1949, and together they raised a remarkable family of ten children: Rebbie Jackson, Jackie Jackson, Tito Jackson, Jermaine Jackson, La Toya Jackson, Marlon Jackson, the late Brandon Jackson (who passed away in 1957), Michael (who tragically passed in 2009), Randy Jackson, and Janet Jackson. Joe also fathered a daughter, Joh’Vonnie Jackson, from an affair with Cheryl Terrell.

When his children were young, Joe took on the monumental role of becoming the talent manager for the Jackson 5. Under his guidance, the group skyrocketed to international fame and became one of the most successful acts in music history. When asked by Closer what he believed made a true star, Joe responded, “It takes a lot of dedication and training—things that are tough but necessary. Nowadays, kids want to focus on having fun all the time, and that’s okay. But it’s important to balance play with preparation for the future. That’s the key to success.”
