In an exclusive sit-down with Closer Weekly, Catherine Bach, the legendary actress who portrayed one of TV's most unforgettable characters, Daisy Duke, opens up about the unexpected journey that almost kept her off the screen. It's a story that's as dramatic as it is surprising, and one you won’t want to miss.
“It was pure chance that I ended up playing Daisy Duke. I’m half Mexican and half German, and at the time, my agency told me, ‘You’re too exotic-looking for TV. You’re not the type of person people see on prime time.’ They even let me go!” Catherine, now 63, shares with Closer, her voice filled with a mix of humor and nostalgia. “Talk about a wake-up call, right?”

But Catherine didn't let that rejection bring her down. Instead, she used it as fuel to prove them wrong. “My ex-husband, David Shaw, worked with Bob Clark, who was collaborating with the show’s creator, Gy Waldron. Bob mentioned, ‘It’d be interesting for them to meet someone I kind of had in mind when I created the character,’” she recalls, her voice brimming with pride.
At first, Catherine wasn't entirely sold on the idea. “I told my friend, ‘I’m not going to audition for this. They’ve been searching for a year, and they want someone who looks like Dolly Parton—blonde and all-American. Not someone like me,’” she laughs, reminiscing about the moment. “But my friend said, ‘Why not just go and see what happens?’ Two weeks later, I had the part. Isn’t that wild?”
Not only did Catherine land the role, but she also played a pivotal part in shaping Daisy Duke’s iconic look. “I actually designed her costume! Isn’t that something?” she beams. “Now, people think of me as the quintessential All-American girl. Who would’ve thought?”
