Let’s face it—nighttime TV just isn’t the same without the legendary David Letterman. In an exclusive sit-down with Closer Weekly, the 70-year-old icon opened up about what he misses most from his iconic 33-year run on Late Show With David Letterman. Spoiler alert: It’s the live music. And boy, does he have some heartfelt thoughts to share!
“For three decades, I had the privilege of experiencing live music every single night,” David reminisced during a special evening where he was honored with The Mark Twain Prize for American Humor in Washington, D.C. “Sure, you can stream music on any device these days, but there’s something magical about hearing it live—watching the band come alive right in front of you. There’s nothing quite like it.” When asked about being celebrated that night, David beamed, “This is all for my son. He inspires me every day.”

While live music holds a special place in his heart, David admitted in October that he doesn’t miss hosting the show—not even for a second. In an interview with The Washington Post, he joked about the pressure-filled world of late-night television: “It was the Late Night Wars, you know—‘Jay’s winning, nobody likes me, and everyone loves Jay.’” Thankfully, fans don’t have to wait long for more Letterman magic. As Closer Weekly previously reported, the comedy legend is stepping back into the spotlight with a new Netflix project set to premiere in 2018.
David Letterman Returns to TV: What to Expect
“I’m thrilled and incredibly fortunate to be working on this project for Netflix,” David said in an official statement. “Here’s what I’ve learned—if you retire to spend more time with your family, it’s always a good idea to check with them first. Thanks for watching, and remember to drive safely.” According to Entertainment Weekly, the highly anticipated series will feature deep dives into conversations with fascinating personalities and segments showcasing David’s trademark curiosity and humor.
Ted Sarandos, Netflix’s Chief Content Officer, couldn’t be more excited about the collaboration. “Meeting David Letterman was already a dream come true, so imagine how pumped I am to announce that we’ll be working together,” he gushed. “David is a television icon, and I can’t wait to see him out in the field, away from the desk, interviewing the people who fascinate him most. Of course, we’ll have to see if he keeps that iconic beard.”
