Imagine Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital without Dr. Miranda Bailey! It's almost unthinkable, right? Well, during the third episode of Grey’s Anatomy's 14th season, fans were left on the edge of their seats as Chief of Surgery Miranda Bailey almost got fired. You can only imagine the panic that set in among devoted Grey’s Anatomy fans when it seemed like actress Chandra Wilson's time on the beloved medical drama might be coming to an end. After all, Chandra has been a cornerstone of the series since its very first season. But we've seen doctors get fired before—just ask Eliza Minnick. However, as the Chief, Miranda is supposed to be the one doing the firing, not the one being fired. Her spirited personality and no-nonsense attitude are what make her such an endearing character. Watch the clip below to relive the moment when Miranda seemingly got the boot during that unforgettable episode!
In the clip, we witness an intense meeting between Dr. Bailey, Catherine Avery, and none other than Harper Avery, Miranda's ex-father-in-law and a board member at Grey Sloan Memorial. During this tense conversation, the board reveals its intention to pull funding, threatening to close down the hospital permanently. Of course, Miranda wouldn't stand for that. She stood her ground, passionately defending the hospital and its mission. If you recall, in the Season 13 finale, an explosion rocked Grey Sloan Memorial, necessitating over $15 million in updates. It was a challenging time for everyone involved, but Miranda was determined to keep the hospital afloat.
After hearing Miranda's impassioned plea, Harper Avery decided not to pull funding, but with a twist—he declared that Miranda was fired. The shock on her face mirrored the collective gasp from fans everywhere when the scene aired. How could we lose such an integral part of the show? Thankfully, the story doesn’t end there. Hours later, Miranda and Catherine return to speak with Harper, only to discover him lifeless in the conference room. After confirming Harper's passing, fellow board member and Harper's grandson, Jackson Avery, tells Miranda to disregard her firing and continue her duties as if nothing happened. A collective sigh of relief echoed through living rooms worldwide!

For now, it seems that Dr. Bailey is safe from being fired, but there may be some personal changes on the horizon for her this season. Earlier this year, it was announced that Miranda's husband, Ben Warren (played by Jason George), is leaving Grey’s Anatomy to join the new spin-off series about Seattle firefighters. While actor Jason George isn't exactly sure how this will affect Ben and Miranda's marriage, he seems confident that Bailey will remain a central figure on the show. “Bailey can come home and fall into bed, and there’s Ben, and they can talk about their day,” he explained to TV Line. “Or Ben comes home from fighting fires all day and falls into bed, and there’s Bailey.” Let’s hope he’s right, because Grey’s Anatomy just wouldn’t be the same without her!
