Back in 2014, the finale of How I Met Your Mother left fans feeling a little less than thrilled. The Original Finale: A Bittersweet Tale
In the original season finale, Ted shares with his children, Luke and Penny, the tale of how he met their mother, Tracy McConnell. It all went down at the wedding of Barney, portrayed by Neil Patrick Harris, and Robin, played by Cobie Smulders, in 2013. Tracy, the bass player in the wedding band, was introduced to Ted by Barney, but Ted declined the introduction because he was leaving for Chicago the next day. Fate, however, had other plans.
After the wedding, Ted crossed paths with Tracy again while waiting for his train. He decided to strike up a conversation, and the two hit it off. They were supposed to get married, but their wedding was postponed after Tracy became pregnant with their first child. Ted eventually re-proposed, and they tied the knot in 2020. Tragically, Tracy passed away from a terminal illness four years later. Meanwhile, Ted's ex-girlfriend Robin was dealing with her lingering feelings for Ted after her divorce from Barney. His kids noticed the tension too and gave Ted their blessing to pursue a relationship with their "Aunt Robin." Many fans felt the original ending was a bit too bleak, as the mother of Ted's children had passed away, and it seemed like he had always been in love with Robin.

What Happens in the Alternate Ending?
In the alternate ending, the story takes a much brighter turn. Tracy is alive and well, and fans get to witness their wedding. Ted gushes about their relationship with heartfelt words: "When I think how lucky I am to wake up next to your mom every morning, I can't help but be amazed at how easy it all really was." He goes on to recap the timeline of his relationship history before giving viewers a glimpse into his first conversation with Tracy.
