Scott Hamilton: A Champion’s Journey Through Adversity

It’s not every day you meet someone who defines resilience like Olympic gold medal-winning figure skater Scott Hamilton. This incredible athlete, now 58, has faced some of the toughest challenges life could throw at him—on and off the ice—and yet he’s emerged stronger than ever. Scott battled testicular cancer in 1997, brain tumors in 2004 and 2010, and more recently, received another brain tumor diagnosis last fall. But instead of letting these obstacles define him, he’s chosen to rise above them with grace, determination, and an unwavering positive attitude. In a recent conversation with Closer Weekly, Scott opened up about his health journey, his inspiring life, and how he continues to stay optimistic despite everything.

When you visit Scott’s website, the very first thing you see is a powerful quote on the homepage: “The only disability in life is a bad attitude.” It’s clear that Scott lives by this mantra every single day. “It’s all about perspective,” he shared exclusively with Closer Weekly. “I was born with a brain tumor, so I trace my story back to being in and out of hospitals from ages four to eight. Back then, doctors couldn’t figure out what was wrong because, in the '60s, they didn’t have the technology to detect it. So, my parents did something truly remarkable—they took me to the rink. That decision changed everything for me. It became my sanctuary, my escape, and eventually, my passion.”

Scott’s legacy extends far beyond his incredible achievements on the ice during the 1984 Winter Olympics. He’s built a remarkable life filled with purpose and passion. Together with his wife, Tracie, 47, he co-founded the wildly successful touring show Stars on Ice, which brought joy to fans all over the world. In 2014, they expanded their family by adopting two children from Haiti, adding even more love and meaning to their lives. Scott also launched the Scott Hamilton CARES Foundation, a cause close to his heart that supports cancer research and helps families dealing with cancer. And if that weren’t enough, he’s even partnered with the Hotel Keys of Hope Cancer Survivors Reunion, further demonstrating his commitment to making a difference in the world.

Scott’s Health Update: Staying Positive Through It All

When asked about his current health, Scott was candid and reassuring. “I’m doing great,” he said with a smile. Thankfully, his latest tumor diagnosis turned out to be benign, and it’s currently behaving itself. “It’s the devil I know instead of the devil I don’t,” he explained, adding that knowing this gives him a great deal of comfort and confidence. It’s this kind of perspective and positivity that makes Scott such an inspiration to so many people. We couldn’t be happier to hear that he’s doing well and continuing to live life to the fullest.
