Don Buchwald, Jay’s agent and longtime friend, confirmed the heartbreaking news to the NY Daily News on Thursday, Aug. 24. In a heartfelt statement, Buchwald described Jay as "one of a kind, never at a loss for words and filled with so much fun and wonderfully whacky thoughts and behavior." Jay was surrounded by his loving family at the time of his passing, including his cherished wife, Sally, and his sons Sam, Max, and J.T. This outpouring of love and support during such a difficult time speaks volumes about the kind of man Jay was—someone who touched the lives of everyone around him.

A Journey Through Jay’s Career
Jay's journey in the world of entertainment began in the small town of Kermit, Texas, where he was born in July 1948. Raised in New Orleans, Jay's big break came in 1979 when he landed a role on the beloved Happy Days spin-off Mork & Mindy. Playing the quirky character Remo DaVinci in 20 episodes of the series, Jay quickly established himself as a comedic force to be reckoned with. But it was his role as Eddie LeBec, Rhea Perlman’s on-screen husband on Cheers, that truly cemented his place in television history. Jay’s performances on Cheers earned him two Primetime Emmy Awards in 1990 and 1991, showcasing his incredible talent and versatility as an actor.

A Versatile Actor With a Heart of Gold
Jay’s career was marked by his ability to seamlessly transition between different roles and genres. He also lent his talents to films such as Mr. Holland’s Opus, The Santa Clause 2, The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause, Labor Pains, and Underdogs. His final role was on the critically acclaimed crime drama Ray Donovan, starring Liev Schreiber.
