What Happened That Night?
Local authorities were called to the scene early Saturday morning, July 8, after reports of a car crash at the Downs residence. Upon arrival, police and firefighters discovered a Hyundai Accent embedded in the front of the home. Sgt. W. Patrick Swanton of the Waco police department informed the Waco-Tribune Herald about the incident.
Assistant Fire Chief Don Yeager provided a vivid description of the crash: “The yard is built up several feet, and he hit the embankment of the yard, apparently went airborne, and like a lot of older homes, this house was built up off the ground, so he cleared the rest of the yard. He didn’t hurt the hedges, but he took out the railing on the porch and went right into the window of the front room and hit an interior wall that might be a load-bearing wall.”

The driver, Allen Wayne Miller, 31, was still inside the car when emergency responders arrived. He attempted to flee the scene but was detained by firefighters. Miller was later arrested and charged with driving under the influence. After receiving treatment for minor injuries at Baylor Scott & White Hillcrest Medical Center, he was transported to McLennan County Jail and released later that evening.

The Downs Family Speaks Out
Ken and Kelly Downs have only been living in the house for a little over a year, after purchasing it through Magnolia Realty, the company owned by Chip and Joanna Gaines. Despite their relatively short time there, they've had their fair share of issues in the neighborhood.
“It’s like the Wild West here,” Kelly explained. “There’s been a lot of commotion coming from the bars and the store across the street. It’s been a problem from the beginning. We’ve lived here a year and a half and we feel deceived by the city of Waco and Magnolia Realty.”
