Back in 1985, when Michael J. Fox and Tracy Pollan shared their first kiss on the set of "Family Ties," neither could have imagined the beautiful life they'd build together. Fast forward a few years, and the duo co-starred in the 1988 film Bright Lights, Big City, where their on-screen chemistry blossomed into a real-life romance. This July 16, the couple celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary, and in a heartfelt interview with People, they opened up about what keeps their marriage so strong and vibrant.
Opposites Attract, But Shared Values Keep Them Together
While Michael and Tracy come from very different backgrounds, they’ve found that their upbringings are actually the glue that holds their marriage together. "Big families, middle children," Michael shared with People, emphasizing their shared sense of humor. "Both our families had that." Tracy echoed the sentiment, adding, "It was us against the world. That’s exactly what we’ve created." Their bond is clearly reflected in the loving family they’ve built, which includes their son Sam, 29, twins Schuyler and Aquinnah, 23, and their youngest daughter Esmé, 16.
The Secret to Three Decades of Love
When asked about the secret to their enduring love, Tracy’s response was simple yet profound: "Just give each other the benefit of the doubt." She explained, "He assumes I’m doing the best I can." Michael chimed in with his own wisdom, saying, "Find the best things about you and the best things about life and celebrate them." It’s this mutual respect and celebration of each other that keeps their love fresh and alive, even after three decades together.

A Marriage Built on Love and Acceptance
For Tracy, every moment with her husband and kids is a treasure. She believes Michael makes her a better person every day. "He’s so relaxed and so accepting of where he is, and that makes it easier for me, the kids, and everyone around him," she said. Despite the challenges they've faced, their bond has only grown stronger over the years.
Facing Challenges Together
When Michael was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, he initially feared Tracy might not want to stay with him. "There were a lot of questions I was afraid to ask Tracy, like ‘Does it scare you that I’m sick? Do you not love me because I’m sick?’ I didn’t ask her those questions," he confessed in a past interview with Oprah Winfrey. Tracy, however, reassured him that their commitment was unwavering. "Any time I would say to myself, 'This isn’t what I bought into,' it wasn’t about Michael being sick. It was about his doubting and the behavior that came out of that fear," she explained. Through it all, they've proven that their love can overcome any obstacle.
