Let’s talk about Hillary Clinton. The former Democratic presidential candidate, now 69 years old, has made it clear she’s not coming back to the campaign trail anytime soon. In a candid new interview, she opened up about why she won’t be running for president in 2020. As the former first lady explained, her days of chasing the Oval Office are over, especially after losing to Republican rival, President Donald Trump.

Why Hillary Clinton Says Her Political Campaigning Days Are Done

In a heartfelt conversation with Jane Pauley on the Sunday, Sept. 10, episode of CBS Sunday Morning, Hillary got real about her decision to step away from the world of campaigning. “As an active politician, it’s over,” she told Pauley. “I am done with being a candidate. But I am not done with politics because I literally believe that our country’s future is at stake.”

During her chat with the show, the women’s rights activist revealed that she was once certain she’d come out victorious against Donald, who was 71 at the time. In fact, Hillary was so confident in her chances of beating the former Celebrity Apprentice host that she and her husband, Bill Clinton, went ahead and purchased the house next door to their Chappaqua, New York, home. This purchase was meant to serve as a secondary location for White House staff and security, just in case they needed extra space.

But things didn’t go as planned. When Hillary realized she had lost the election to Trump, she admitted feeling an overwhelming sense of sadness. “I just felt this enormous letdown, just kind of loss of feeling and direction and sadness,” she explained. “It was a very hard transition. I really struggled. I couldn’t feel, I couldn’t think, I was just gob-smacked, wiped out.”

    What’s Next for Hillary Clinton?

While she hasn’t provided many specifics about her future plans, Hillary recently launched “Onward Together,” a Political Action Committee aimed at supporting candidates and organizations with progressive agendas. She’s also releasing her memoir, What Happened, on Tuesday, Sept. 12. In this book, the best-selling author dives deep into her experience running against Donald Trump. She shares her thoughts on his controversial behavior, including the misogynistic comments he made about groping women, as captured in a leaked Access Hollywood tape.
