Let’s talk about Joan Lunden. This incredible woman, now 67 years old, is not just surviving but thriving after her battle with breast cancer. You might see her out and about, dressed in her signature pink, but let me tell you, it’s more than just a fashion statement. It’s a symbol of her journey, her strength, and her newfound purpose. Joan’s life has changed dramatically since her diagnosis back in 2014, but today, she’s cancer-free and on a mission to make a difference. "I’m doing absolutely amazing because I’ve finished all my treatments," she said recently. "The tough battle I went through gave me a new mission in life."

Closer Weekly had the chance to sit down with Joan at the Breast Cancer Research Foundation New York Symposium and Awards in October. She was there not just as a survivor but as an advocate, standing up for breast cancer research and awareness. Cancer, she says, changes you in ways you can’t imagine. But for Joan, it’s been a full-circle moment. "I’m the daughter of a cancer surgeon, and I always thought I’d follow in his footsteps," she explained. But life had other plans.

  • Here’s the thing: Joan’s dad, Dr. Erie Blunden, was a cancer surgeon who she admired deeply. But tragically, he passed away in a plane crash when she was just 13 years old. That loss steered her away from medicine. However, after her own diagnosis, she realized she could use her experience as a TV host to make a difference. "I can share what I’ve learned and be an advocate," she said. "It’s a way to carry on my dad’s legacy." Her advice? Stay vigilant about your health, and don’t be afraid to accept help when you need it. "I’m a Type A person," she admitted. "It wasn’t easy for me to let others in, but emotional support is crucial during tough times."

Family Support: The Backbone of Her Recovery

Joan’s husband, Jeff Konigsberg, and her seven kids—three daughters from her first marriage and two sets of twins she and Jeff had through a surrogate—were her rock throughout her battle. Their love and encouragement kept her going. Now, she says, they’re all thriving. "They’ve been incredible," she shared. "I’m so grateful for everyone who stood by me. It changes your perspective. You start appreciating every little thing—every sunrise, every sunset, even the quirky things your dog does." It’s a powerful reminder that life is precious and worth celebrating, no matter what challenges come your way.
