There was a wedding that seemed to stop the world in its tracks. Back in 1981, Diana Spencer walked down the aisle to become Princess Diana, marrying Prince Charles in a grand royal ceremony that captured the imagination of millions around the globe. But as we all know now, their story wasn't destined to end in happily ever after. By 1996, the couple had parted ways, their fairytale turning into a very public divorce.
Now, years later, we're getting a glimpse into the personal turmoil of that time through letters written by Prince Charles himself. These letters, shared by The Mail on Sunday, reveal a side of the prince that was deeply private and emotional, reaching out to a surprising confidant—former U.S. First Lady Nancy Reagan.
Let’s rewind a bit. Prince Charles and Nancy Reagan weren't just casual acquaintances; they were close friends for more than four decades. Their bond was so strong that Charles would often turn to her for support, even penning heartfelt letters until her passing in 2016. In one of these letters, dated June 21, 1992, Charles opened up about the chaos surrounding the release of Andrew Morton's book Diana: Her True Story.

Addressing her as "My Dear Nancy," Charles wrote, “No one can really understand what it all means until it happens to you, which is why it all keeps getting worse and worse.” He went on to hint at a dramatic narrative, saying, "One day I will tell you the whole story. It is a kind of Greek tragedy and would certainly make a very good play!"
Charles couldn't help but express the overwhelming nature of his situation, acknowledging, "It is so awful that very few people who haven’t been witnesses would believe it."
In another letter, sent before his 10th wedding anniversary, Charles confided in Nancy about the upcoming storm of books set to expose the royal family's private lives. "There are a whole series of ghastly books coming out. You can imagine what they will contain," he lamented.
Charles' Loss of the Queen Mother
Charles also leaned on Nancy Reagan during the difficult period following the passing of the Queen Mother in 2002. In a heartfelt message, he admitted, "I fear it has not been very easy to cope of late. I have dreaded her eventual departure and now she leaves an enormous chasm in my life." Yet, he found solace in her legacy, writing, "However, she also leaves behind the most wonderful legacy of unbelievably happy memories… Oh, how we shall all miss her and everything she stood for."
These letters, once part of Mrs. Reagan's private collection, have now been handed over to the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Library, offering the world a rare glimpse into the emotional life of a man often seen as a figurehead.
